January 2012: Shottle son tops Ballymena Holstein entry at 3,300gns

Prices reached a ceiling of 3,300gns and 14 lots changed hands to average 1,845 per head at Holstein NI’s January bull sale, hosted by J A McClelland and Sons at Ballymena Livestock Market.

Topping the sale was the first bull into the ring, Rossigh Shottle Minstrel, bred by Gerry O’Donnell who had made the trip from Killadeas in County Fermanagh.  This two-year-old entry was sired by Picston Shottle, and is bred from the VG87 (2yr) Croagh Susie Mist 33 which gave over 9,500kgs at 5.20%BF and 3.42%P in her second lactation.

Bidding was brisk for this eye-catching bull. The successful bidder was pedigree breeder Noel Muldrew from Castle Dillon in County Armagh.  As the buyer of the highest priced lot Mr Muldrew was the recipient of the 100 cash bonus sponsored by AI Services (NI) Ltd.

Second highest price of the day 2,300gns was paid to Mervyn McGimpsey, Newtownards, for the August 2010 born Towerview Reliant ET. Sired by O-Bee Manfred Justice, his dam is Relough Shottle Raven ET PI GP83. This one was snapped up by James McVitty from Newtownbutler, County Fermanagh, who received the 50 buyer bonus.

Two lots came under the hammer of auctioneer Jonathan Speers at 2,200gns each.

First into the salering at 2,200gns was Ballycrochan Golden Shot brought out by Aubrey Patterson, and herdsman Raymond MCartney from Bangor, County Down. This April 2010 born bull was sired by Picston Shottle, and is out of the home-bred Ballycrochan Goldwyn Sara GP84 which gave over 10,000kgs at 4.27%BF and 3.88%P in her second 305-day lactation.

Also selling at 2,200gns was Moree Burns Megalite, a September 2010 born entry consigned by Bertie Kelso and Sons, Pomeroy, Dungannon.  Sired by Dudoc Mr Burns, he is bred from the VG85 Moree Scarlet Meg, which produced over 9,900kgs at 4.58%BF and 3.25%P in her fourth 305-day lactation. Buyers were Messrs D and A Erwin from Ballymena, County Antrim.

Next best at 2,100gns was the September 2010 born Carnhill C Planet bred by Conor Casey, Cloughmills, County Antrim.  This Ensenada Taboo Planet son is out of the home-bred Carnhill Leif Claire EX90, which gave over 10,500kgs at 4.45%BF and 3.59%P in her third 305-day lactation.

Catalogues are now available for Holstein NI’s bull sale which takes place at Ballymena Mart on Friday, January 13.

Auctioneer Jonathan Speers of J A McCelland and Sons said:”The catalogue features an outstanding entry of 24 pedigree Holstein bulls from many of the Province’s leading herds. Packed with choice from start to finish, it offers a selection of bulls by leading AI sires and bred from GP, VG and EX dams.

“As well as bulls from world-renown AI sires, the catalogue includes several bulls by next generation out-cross sires, which are suitable for dairy herds interested in acquiring new bloodlines.”

Sires represented the catalogue include: Ensenada Taboo Planet, Ralma Oman Cricket, Dudoc Mr Burns, Aprilday Wisconsin Red, Rietben Tee Off ET, Jenny Lou Mrshl Toystory, Ri-val-re, Comestar Outside, Picton Shottle, O-Bee Manfred Justice, Jango, Sicy Knowledge, Regancrest Elton Durham, Gen-Mark Stmatic Sanchez, Glen-mark Stamatic Sanchez, Sandy Valley Bolton, Bannwater Noontide, Bannwater Dupa, Majestic Jack and Schillview Garrett.

Herds represented include: Ballycrochan, Ballyweaney, Bannwater, Carnhill, Cloney, Frocess, Hilltara, Inch, Killane, Majestic, Moree, Rossigh and Towerview.

The Kelso family from Dungannon are offering three outcross bulls including Moree Cricket Bat, a Cricket x Reggie from the sister of perhaps the most influential bull in Holstein history - Braedale Goldwyn - five times premier sire at Madison. Goldwyn daughters have sold to $1.5 million – Missy who was grand champion Madison and Toronto 2011. He boasts a high PLI and excels for components, daughter fertility and super udders. Other family members include: Gillette Willrock, Wildthing, Watchout, Stanleycup, Windbrook, Bambam, Bolton, Pagewire, Icefyre, Freeman, Freelance and Spy.

Jim Morrison, Downpatrick, offers two bulls including Inch Outcross from Inch Lancelot Daphne EX91, a sister to Inch Storm Daphne EX 95 4E SP LP60 twice supreme champion at the Irish National Holstein Show, NISA McLarnon Dairy Cow of the Year, and best exhibitor-bred cow in the Holstein NI herd competition; and gave 12,325kg at 4.78%butterfat and 3.53%protein. Inch Outcross is a great all-rounder offering + 167 kg milk, 11kg fat and 12kg protein with +06% butterfat and + 09% protein. One of the first sons in Northern Ireland of the great new outcross sire Niagra, whose heifer calf, Willsbro Niagra Pammy, sold recently at Bristol for 36,000gns.  The Daphne family has sold at Ballymena and Moira for between 4000gns and 5000gns.

Mervyn and Gareth Smyth of the Ballyweaney herd, Cloughmills offer three embryo transfer bulls by world leading sires Regancrest Elton Durham and Sanchez.  Their December 2010 born bull Ballyweaney Alex ET is bred from Budjon Integrity Ally ET EX90, an influential donor cow whose embryos have sold worldwide.  Her Grand Dam Budjon Stardust Anisa ET EX96 3E was four times nominated All-American Cow.

The Hilltara herd of Sam and John McCormick, Bangor offers two bulls, Hilltara Mercutio, an October 2010 son of Sandy Valley Bolton bred from Hilltara Talent Meggie EX91; and Hilltara Energy, another October 2010 born bull whose dam, Hilltara Dombinator Echo 4 EX91 (8), has produced a total lifetime yield of 131,928kg.

Gerard O’Donnell  of the Rossigh herd travels from Enniskillen offering two bulls by Comestar Outside and Picston Shottle.

The Majestic herd of Ian and Kenny Watson, Macosquin, offers two bulls, Majestic Friction who is bred from six generations  of VG/EX from the Dellia's (Regancrest) which has produced many bull's including Durham, Dundee, Mac and Iota to name a few. Also on offer is Majestic Legend bred from  eight generations  of VG/EX, and whose dam offers fantastic fat and protein components.

Local breeders Austin and David Perry from Ahoghill, offer two outstanding bulls from their noted Killane herd, by Sicy Knowledge from Killane Outside Roberta  EX94(4E) average 11,029kgs at 4.26% butterfat and 3.22% protein in six complete lactations and backed by twelve consecutive  generations of VG and EX.

Wallace Gregg offers two bulls from his Cloughmills-based Frocess herd, Frocess Magic Man by April-Day Wisconsin Red and from Frocess Predator Maggie who was 2nd senior cow in-milk at the RUAS Winter Fair 2010. Also on offer is Frocess Barley Bin whose dam is Weeton Lee B Balise from the renowned Weeton herd, and averaged 4.82% butterfat and 3.53% protein over five lactations.

Holstein NI chairman Alan Cleland said:”This is our first bull sale of the New Year and will follow the same format as our 2011 October sale at Ballymena. Instead of the pre-sale show, we are offering a 100 bonus to the buyer of the highest priced bull, and a 50 bonus to the buyer of the second highest priced bull. The vendors of the highest priced lots will also receive 50 each.

“Holstein NI has also introduced a strict entry criteria ensuring all bulls have been tested for BVD with a negative PI result, and have been fully vaccinated for BVD. “

A super third calver from the Glasson herd of Philip and Simon Haffey, Portadown, scooped the Holstein and interbreed dairy honours at Lurgan Show. She later went on to take the overall cattle championship at the 2010 event.
