January 2014: Champion tops Ballymena Holstein bull entry at 3,300gns

Pedigree black and white bulls sold in a buoyant trade with 12 lots averaging 2,100 per head at Holstein NI’s January show and sale, held at Ballymena Mart.

Sale leader at 3,300gns was the day’s supreme champion Rossigh Ross exhibited by Gerry O’Donnell, and son Gareth, who had made the trip from Killadeas in County Fermanagh.

Born in April 2012, he was sired by the O Bee Manfred Justice son Regancrest Alta Iota, and is backed by seven successive generations of VG and EX dams. His dam was Sanigar James Rose EX94 3E – reserve champion at Enniskillen Show in 2011 as a fifth calver, and best senior cow in the senior section of Holstein NI’s 2012 herds inspection competition. Buyer was J Wasson, Cloughmills.

The pre-sale show was judged by Willard Watson from the noted Derrydorragh Herd based at Macosquin, County Londonderry. Sponsor Jennifer Maybin from Quicktag was on-hand to congratulate the winners and present the awards.

Second highest price of the day 2,800gns, went to William and David Campbell, Coleraine, County Londonderry, for the September 2012 born Ballylagan Spartan ET. He was sired by the O Bee Manfred Justice son Flevo Genetics Snowman, and is bred from Blondin Goldwyn Sabrina EX92 2E. Highest bidder was T McCracken from Limavady.

The honourable mention award went to the April 2012 born Leif son Rossigh Lou which changed hands at 2,000gns for the O’Donnell family. He is backed by 10 generations of VG and EX dams, and sold to R Freeman from Dervock.

Also selling at 2,000gns was the June 2012 born Ballyweaney Raymond ET bred by Gareth Smyth, Dunloy, County Antrim. He was sired by ERB Acres Damion, and is out of Whitaker Storm U Rae ET EX93 who goes back to the Roxy family. Highest bidder was WJ Henderson from Bangor
