May 2013: Holstein success for Pepper family at Balmoral Show

One of the best young cows in Europe was how interbreed judge John Gribbon from Lancashire described the Holstein and overall champion of champions in the dairy section at this year’s Balmoral Show.

Scooping top honours in the dairy line-up was the Holstein leader, Sahara Goldwyn Ambrosia, exhibited by the Pepper family who run a 350-cow herd at Quilly Farms, Dromore, County Down.

This much-admired second calver was purchased for 5,100gns as a maiden heifer at the Stars of Sahara Sale in 2010. Sired by Braedale Goldwyn, she is bred from Smiddiehill Toystory Ambrosia, and gave over 12,600kgs in her heifer lactation.

Five weeks calved and producing 50kgs daily at 5.1% butterfat and 3.0% protein, she was praised by John Gribbon for her style and ring presence. “This young cow is a fine example of the black and white breed. She is great through the front end and carries a super udder full of veination. “

These words were echoed by Holstein judge Elwyn Thomas who runs the 150-cow Gatrog Herd at Kidwelly in Carmathenshire. “I really admire this cow. Everything is good about her - cleanliness of bone, depth of heel, and a high and wide rear udder.”

Neil Pepper was delighted with his day’s achievements. “We have only been showing for two or three years, and this has been a dream come true. This is our first-ever championship, and we are even more thrilled to have won the overall interbreed award.”

The reserve Holstein championship went to Sam and John McCormick’s third calver Hilltara Zenith Echo EX93. “I really admire this cow. She is everything we want in the Holstein breed,”added Elwyn Thomas.

Sired by Ocean Zenith Echo, this one is bred from Hilltara Champion Echo EX91. She is no stranger to show success, having won the supreme championship at the Irish National Holstein Show in March; as well as the Holstein championship and reserve interbreed title at the RUAS Winter Fair in December 2012.

Claiming the honourable mention award was the second placed third calver, Clandeboye Champion Francesca, from Lady Dufferin’s Clandeboye Estates based at Bangor, County Down.  Sired by Calbrett IHH Champion, she also has a list of show accolades to her credit.

The junior Holstein championship went to another strong prospect for the future, Gravelhill Alexander Hope VG88, exhibited by Conor McAufield who runs a 160-cow herd near Lisburn, County Antrim.  Sired by Golden Oaks Alexander, she is bred from seven straight generations of EX dams, and was purchased privately from David and Hilary Wilson, Newtownabbey, County Antrim.

This eye-catching heifer calved her first in December, and won the intermediate championship at the Irish National Holstein Show.

Runner-up in the junior championship line-up was Hilltara Knowledge Maude, a first calver brought out by Holstein NI chairman, Sam McCormick, and son John. Sired by Sicy Knowledge, her dam is the home-bred Hilltara Leduc Maude 2 VG85.

Concluding Elwyn Thomas said: “It has been an honour and a privilege to judge the Holstein entry at Balmoral Show. I was warned beforehand that the quality of the cattle would be high, but it is higher than high!

“The second and third calvers really stood out, both in numbers and quality. Special congratulations to all of the exhibitors for putting on a tremendous show of well-presented quality cattle.”
