2009: 20,000gns record

Elite heifer calves sell to average 4,188

A 20,000gns European record for an unborn calf grabbed the headlines during the Semex Elite Heifer Sale, held last week at the Causeway Classic.

One of the greatest show cows ever was Tri-Day Ashlyn. She was All American and All Canadian in 2001. She was also Grand Champion at both Madison and The Royal that year. In turn she bred a Stormatic daughter who also went on to be a great show cow and has already been Reserve All American and 2nd at Madison. It was her Goldwyn daughter that was selling on first choice from one of three pregnancies due in about one month’s time. Iain McLean from the Priestland herd, Bushmills was the vendor who put his best foot forward by offering this mouth-watering opportunity with the purchaser being David McAfee of the Glamour Holstein herd in County Antrim.

Next highest call of the sale was 6,600gns, paid to Harry Patton, and sons, Wallace and Wilson, Newtownards, for a lovely Baxter daughter from the noted Sara cow family. Dam is a VG 88 2yr by Rosedale Rampage Red, with grand dam being Ridgefield Talent Sara Red (VG 88) 2yr and 3.dam being the 30,000gns Copywood Integrity Sara Red (EX 93)2E. Purchaser was Angus Mawhinney, Doagh, Ballyclare for his Croftburn herd.

Sam and John McCormick, Bangor, re synonymous with the great Maude cow, and no high flying sale in this country would be complete without the inclusion of a member of this great family. They offered an Atlas daughter from Champion Maude 4 (VG 87) 2yr who was from Gibson Maude, who in turn was from Integrity Maude, and then old Maude herself - all three cows having been classified Excellent. She realised 6,300gns going to Muldrew Brothers from Castledillon Estates, Armagh.

Trevor Keatley from Castlederg had a very smart Talent heifer which was from the famous Roxy line. Her dam was a September Storm daughter who classified (VG 88) 2yr, and was bred from Scientific Raes Hope Red (EX 92) who was All American Junior 2yr old (R & W) and is maternal sister to the great Scientific Debutante Rae (EX 92)who was also All American and 1st at Madison. She sold for 6,000gns to Cyril and Martin Millar who have established a new pedigree Holstein herd at Coleraine.

Philip and Simon Haffey from Portadown had a pair of the youngest calves in the sale. These were by Braedale Goldwyn from the Ghost cow family which originated with Witbourne Counselor Ghost (EX 92). She bred three generations of Excellent daughters, one of the most prolific of which was Ridgefield Storm Ghost (EX 93)2E which went on to win Intermediate Champion NHS and All Britain Junior cow 2003; Reserve Supreme and Best Udder in Show RASE 2005and to produce over 15,000kgs of milk also. Her daughter was Riverdane Silky Ghost (VG 88)3yr who was the dam of the two Goldwyn heifers selling on choice. John Patterson, and sons, James and Andrew, from the Ballyginniff herd at Crumlin had no hesitation in paying 5,000gns. for the one which had earlier won her show class against stiff opposition from 20 other similar aged calves. The Haffey’s was persuaded to part with her stable mate for the sum of 3,500gns going to Muldrew Bros again.

The sale averaged 4,188 with all lots barr the last selling.
