CAUSEWAY CLASSIC BREEDER TOUR PROFILES

MAJESTIC HOLSTEINS

The Best Small herd (Premier Section) 2010, the Majestic herd of Ian and Kenny Watson, Coleraine, are realising an average of 9.000kgs 4.10% 3.30% (2x daily) currently milking 100 pedigree Holsteins. Their current classification is an impressive 27 Excellent and 43 VG cows. The herd was depopulated in 1998 and following restocking now goes from strength to strength. Kenny believes in the marketing and promotion of the families that he has invested in. This certainly paid off at the HUK Genetic Elite Sale 2004 where Majestic Gibson Amanda realised 10,000gns. Another 10,000gns topper was realised just last year at the Sale of the Century for a first choice pregnancy from Majestic Shottle Leona. This “Best Small Herd” winner in 2008 2009 and 2010 is also home to families such as Pledge, Licorice, Anna; Frisky, Roxy, Amanda, Janina and Kayla. Staying ahead of the game, two genomic leading young bulls are sold into AI realising an index of 2,200GTPI. Annually about 5 young bulls are sold into AI with approximately 15 sold to local breeders.

GLASSON HOLSTEINS

This Best Small Herd (Junior Section) 2010 of Philip and Simon Haffey has recently claimed the Reserve All Britain title for Copywood Goldwyn Sara 2 VG88 2Yr. She was crowned Reserve Junior Champion Causeway Classic 2009; Junior Champion Winter Fair & overall Honourable Mention and most recently Best Overall Heifer in NI Herds Competition 2010.  Her first completed lactation has realised 11,114kgs 4.40%fat 3.42% protein. Recent show ring success was achieved by Glasson Shottle Martina VG88 2Yrs picking up the Junior Champion title at Balmoral Spring Show. Progeny and embryos from world renowned cow families have been purchased including Denmire PS Marie at Smiddiehill Sale for 12,000gns. This stylish heifer sired by Shottle is bred from 3 EX94 100 tonne dams. Other big names featuring at Glasson include Balise, Jodie, Molli, Ashlyn, Kitty, Ghost, Glora, Erle, Zandra and Claire. A key factor to profitable milk production is milk quality with the rolling 12month average currently of 10,350 kgs 2x 4.38% 3.32%P for 100 cows and heifers milking.

ARDS HOLSTEINS

Ards is home of the Ruth’s and is the only foundation cow in the Holstein books to classify EX100! To date approximately 40 percentage of the 250strong herd is made up of Ruth family members. Achieving the Best cow family in the NI herds competition 2009, the Ruths not only perform in the parlour but are also a true breeding family with sons in AI including Joylan Specialist EX91 from Ards Juror P Ruth EX90, Ards Reunion EX92 from Ards Cousteau Ruth EX92 and Ards Revelation EX96 from Ards Juror I Ruth 3 EX94 6E. Other families emerging at Ards are Lou Ella, Primrose,  Danna, Sara, Alicia, Raven, Pledge, Juror Faith, Lead May, Judy, Dellia, Bliss, Tripoli, Elegance, Butterfly, Hillary and Zandra, Currently the Patton family are milking daughters by Toystory, Bolton, Zenith, Shottle and Talent, to name a few and contribute to the herd average of  8,200kgs 3.85% 3.25% (250 cows & heifers). Ards Holsteins has been a close 2nd Large Herd (Premier Section) to Hilltara 2009 and 2010.

HILLTARA HOLSTEINS

She’s coming 18 years old and has 19 brood stars below her belt, Medway Supreme Maude EX97 8E, is home at Hilltara Holsteins. In her lifetime, she has given over 165,000kgs of milk and is the only cow outside North America to be nominated Canadian Cow of the Year 2003 & 2004! Maude has been nominated All Britain Mature cow 2002 and Reserve All Britain for 6 consecutive times! Maude herself has 4 Excellent and 9 VG daughters and has over 100 descendents on the farm! Other great families include Dawn, Echo, Charlotte and Tippy’s. A special favourite is Hilltara Mtoto Dawn EX95 3E and has completed 100tons in 5 lactations – 30.44kgs for every day she has been alive. The Hilltara herd has 68 EX and 123 VG cows and have picked up Best Large herd 6 times and the Best Overall Herd in Northern Ireland 2008, 2009 and 2010.  A great National accolade for this Bangor based herd was gaining 2nd Best Herd throughout the UK in 2009 & 3rd in 2008.  The McCormick family of Sammy, Trish and John are currently milking 250 cows (2x daily) achieving a herd average of 9300kgs 4.18% 3.23% in their new 40:40Delaval milking parlour.
