January 2013: Holstein NI member to judge at European show
Holstein NI member David Boyd from Glaslough, County Monaghan, has been invited to judge at the 2013 European Holstein and Red Holstein Championships in Switzerland.
Mr Boyd, who runs the noted Glaslough herd in partnership with his brother, will preside over the individual Holstein competition, while Danish judge Niels Erik Haahr will place the classes in the red Holstein line-up.
Organised by the Swiss Holstein Federation, the event takes place at Fribourg on Friday, March 1, and Saturday, March 2.
The Glaslough herd comprises of 50 cows – 14 EX and 33VG, as well as 80 heifers. The herd produces an average 305-day yield of over 10,300kgs of milk at 3.69% butterfat and 3.29% protein.
David Boyd has been accredited as a judge by the Irish Holstein Friesian Association for more than 20 years, and is a member of the IHFA Board. He has judged at a large number of shows throughout Ireland, the UK, Portugal and Italy; and has taken part in the last four workshops for European judges.
Holstein NI is planning a three-day trip (March 1 to 3) to the event. The itinerary includes the Swiss European Sale, the European Holstein and Red Holstein championships and prize giving ceremony, and several farm visits.
