December 2010 - Holstein UK honours
Two local members have received honours from Holstein UK in recognition of their achievements. The prestigious awards were presented by Society president, Bernard Liddle, during the RUAS Winter Fair, Balmoral.
Wilbert Rankin from Crumlin received Holstein UK’s Distinguished Achievement Award, while Ian Watson, Macosquin, was awarded Master Breeder status.
Breed stalwart, Wilbert Rankin, has been associated with pedigree black and white breeding since the mid 1960’s. He owned the 100-cow Ballysculty herd prior to his retirement in 1999.
Mr Rankin was chairman of the Northern Ireland Holstein Friesian Breeders’ Club in 1983/85 when the breed celebrated its 75th Anniversary. He is also a past council member of the British Friesian Society, and was elected president of Holstein UK in 2007 - a huge honour as only two Northern Ireland breeders have held the presidency, the other being Sam Wilson (Potterswalls) in 1980.
Holstein NI nominated Wilbert Rankin for the award earlier this year. Holstein UK president, Bernard Liddle, said: ”This award is richly deserved. A small number of people are nominated for the Distinguished Achievement Award. It is designed to honour members who have shown great enthusiasm for the breed, and given years of dedicated service to their local club and Holstein UK.”
Holstein NI board member, Ian Watson, who runs the Majestic herd in partnership with his son, Kenny, was honoured to receive the society’s Master Breeder Award.
Bernard Liddle added:”The Master Breeder Award is only presented to members who meet the high qualification standards outlined by the society. It’s a very prestigious award, and there are only 26 Master Breeders in the UK.”
Holstein UK president, Bernard Liddle, described the RUAS Winter Fair as a smashing show. “This is my first time at the event. It’s been well supported and there is a tremendous show of cattle. Congratulations to the breeders for turning out a great line-up of cattle, especially given the wintry weather conditions outside.
