May 2014: Holstein bulls to 3,200gns at Kilrea

Pedigree Holstein bulls reached a ceiling of 3,200gns, with 14 lots selling in a 94% clearance to level at 2,048 each, at Holstein NI’s May show and sale hosted by Kilrea Mart.

Topping the sale at 3,200gns was the second prize winning Inch Hilbert exhibited by Jim Morrison from Downpatrick, County Down. This sixteen-month-old entry was sired by Tittenser Hylke, and is bred from Inch Starboy Avice 9 EX93 4E LP70 SP, who has produced an average of 10,295kgs at 5.5% fat and 3.18% protein in six 305-day lactations. Buyer was Hudson Steele from Portglenone, County Antrim.

Next best at 3,000gns was the fifteen-month-old Glasson Mesmerise, who caught the eye of judge Gaston Wallace, Nutt’s Corner, to take the supreme championship ribbons sponsored by Smyths Daleside Feeds.

Glasson Mesmerise was sired by Pine Tree Sid, and is out of the Regancrest Dundee daughter Glasson Dundee Marigold VG85 who goes back to the Fradon Maude family in Canada. Bred by Philip and Simon Haffey, Portadown, County Armagh, this one joins David and Alan Wallace’s 220-cow Abercorn Herd based at Antrim, County Antrim.

Also commanding a price tag of 3,000gns was the fourteen-month-old Prehen Frazer bred Holstein NI vice-chairman Stuart Smith, and father Robbie, from Londonderry.  Sired by Amighetti Numero Uno, he is bred from Prehen Mascol Froukje VG87 – formerly number ten on the UK’s PLI cow list.  Prehen Frazer has a PLI 223 and sold to Henry Donaghy from Eglinton, County Londonderry.

Picston Shottle was behind the breeding of Philip and Simon Haffey’s Glasson Bigshot which came under the hammer of auctioneer Mark Stewart at 2,300gns. His dam is the Mesland Duplex daughter Glasson Duplex A Balise VG87 (2yr). Buyer was William McBurney from Ballymena, County Antrim.

Reserve champion was Ballylagan Spartacus ET, a September 2012 born Flevo Genetics Snowman son exhibited by William and David Campbell, Coleraine, County Londonderry. He attracted a bid of 1,820gns from James Sayers, Cloughmills, County Antrim.

The honourable mention award winner was Mullaugher Manitoba, a December 2012 born Moorshard Democracy son bred by Norman McNaugher, and son David, Aghadowey, County Londonderry. This one changed hands at 1,660gns, selling to Raymond Gillespie, Ahoghill.

The prize winners were congratulated by Stuart Fulton from Smyths Daleside Feeds.

Results from the judging ring include:

Class 1 – 1, and reserve champion, William and David Campbell, Ballylagan Spartacus ET by Flevo Genetics Snowman; 2,  and honourable mention, Norman and David McNaugher, Mullaugher Manitoba by Moorshard Democracy; 3, Barrie Barr, Goldplough Tall Story by O-Man End Story.
