April 2013: Laurelhill dispersal peaks at 8,500gns

Fay family dominates with 62 members averaging 3,003 per head

Holstein enthusiasts travelled from throughout the UK and Ireland to attend the dispersal of Brian and Anne Mawhinney’s noted Laurelhill herd, held on-farm at Doagh, County Antrim.

Prices soared to a top of 8,500gns, and a further 30 lots attracted bids in excess of 3,000gns each.

Auctioneer Michael Taaffe described the sale as exceptional. “The catalogue was packed full of deep pedigrees and cows with high yields and super components. Bidding was brisk from start to finish, and the Fay family was certainly sought-after, with 62 family members selling to average 3,003 per head. “

Sale leader was the much-admired second calver Laurelhill Maestro Fay ET VG88 (PLI 227). Sired by Cogent Maestro, she is bred from Laurelhill Ford Fay EX91, and produced over 10,500kgs at 5.17%BF and 3.70%P in her heifer lactation. Calved four months and yielding 38kgs daily, she attracted a flurry of bids from the packed salering. Successful bidder was Eryl Done from Wyevalley Dairy Genetics Ltd based at Ladybank Farm, Credenhill, Hereford, who purchased a total of eight lots, including her full sister, Laurelhill Maestro B Fay ET VG86 (PLI 197) at 3,000gns.

A daughter of the sale leader, Laurelhill Prince Fay ET (PLI 106), sold at 3,600gns to Kathleen Dwyer from Killorglin, County Kerry.

Second highest price of the day 5,600gns was realised by the January 2008 born Laurelhill Roxell Fay EX90 (PLI 221). She is by Joylan Roxell, and is a maternal sister to the sale leader. In-calf and due shortly to Morningview Levi, she averaged 9,671kgs at 4.31%BF and 3.72%P in three lactations. This one sold with contract interest, and was snapped up by Wesley Gordon from Brooksie Farm, Annalong, County Down.

April 2013: Yields, components and proven pedigrees on offer  at Laurelhill dispersal sale

Ballyclare venue for on-farm sale on Saturday, April 20

The Laurelhill Dispersal, which has been billed as one of the most anticipated Holstein sales of 2013, takes place on Saturday, April 20.

Conducted by Taaffe Auctions, the event will be hosted on-farm by the Mawhinney family at 21 Strand Road, Doagh, Ballyclare, County Antrim, BT39 0RF, commencing at 11am.

Laurelhill is the number seven PLI herd in the UK (Av PLI 102), and is being dispersed due to a change in farming policy.

The catalogue includes the entire milking portion of the 100-cow herd, 22 in-calf heifers due from September to November, eight select heifer calves, and one deep pedigreed bull. Several animals featured in the catalogue sell with contract interest from leading AI companies, and all animals are fully tested and eligible for immediate export to the UK and Ireland.

This is a young herd, with over half of the herd comprising of milking heifers. All autumn calvers have been scanned in-calf to top AI bulls.

On offer are daughters of internationally acclaimed AI sires such as Alexander, Focus, Hayden, Jeeves, Lauden, Million, Oman, Sanchez, Shottle, Spooky and Tennyson. Youngstock is bred from leading bulls such as Doberman, Morningview Levi, Goldmine, Twist and Wyman.

The Laurelhill herd is currently producing an average annual yield of 9,753kgs at 4.17% butterfat and 3.39% protein, with a somatic cell count of 155. Its latest milk recording has resulted in an average of 34kgs per head at 4.92%BF and 3.46%P.

Auctioneer Michael Taaffe said:”This is one of the country’s finest and most successful herds. The entire catalogue offers prospective purchasers the complete package – high yielding dairy cows with excellent components, and proven pedigrees.”

Established by Brian Mawhinney in 1982, the herd is famed for its fantastic Laurelhill Fay cow family, which originates from the famous Holtex Fay family in the USA. The foundation cow, Drumkee Mark Fay (EX91-10*) bred four EX and two VG daughters, and today the ‘Fay’ family makes up more than fifty per cent of the current milking herd.

Michael Taaffe added:”The Fay family has had a tremendous impact on the Laurelhill herd. The forthcoming dispersal offers pedigree breeders a unique opportunity to tap into the great Fay family which has been breeding consistently for generations, and more recently, has attracted considerable contract interest from several leading AI companies.”

Several of the herd’s headliners include:

Laurelhill Laudan Fay EX91 (2E) PLI 168 (Lot 33), produced a yield of over 12,800kgs at 4.3%BF and 3.39%P in her second 305-day lactation. She produced over 10,500kgs at 5.17%BF and 3.70%P in her heifer lactation, and sells alongside a New Farm Britt Prince daughter (in-calf to Galaxy) with contact interest.
