February 2016: Reserve champion tops Moira Holstein trade at 2,100gns.
Pedigree Holstein females reached a ceiling of 2,100gns at the club’s February show and sale, held at Moira.
Following a 79% clearance Taaffe Auctions confirmed that 15 lots changed hands to average £1,310 each.
Sale leader was Relough Planet Girl, a November 2013 born Ensenada Taboo Planet daughter bred by Ronald McLean and Sons, Donaghmore. She was crowned reserve champion at the pre-sale show sponsored by Kilco Chemicals. Bred from Relough Jeeves Girl EX92-3E, this one joins the Bangor-based Ballycrochan herd.
Next best at 1,900gns was the honourable mention award winner Ards Delano Ruth, a two-year-old Southland Delano daughter consigned by Harry Patton and Sons, Newtownards. She is bred from Ards Talent O Ruth, and was snapped up by William Herron, Newtownhamilton.
Next best at 1,880gns was the second calver Hilltara Wyman Maude, a potential eleventh generation VG/EX cow from Sam and John McCormick’s herd at Bangor. She produced over 8,000kgs at 3.51% butterfat and 3.16% protein in her first 305-day lactation. This one also joins William Herron’s herd.
Judge Gaston Wallace, Printshop Herd, Nutt’s Corner, awarded the supreme championship ribbons to Kilvergan Wyman Erle 2 VG86-2yr bred by the Haffey family from Lurgan. This second calver was sired by Pirolo Goldwyn Wyman, and is bred from Kilvergan Bolivia Erle VG88. She failed to meet in her reserve and returned home unsold.
Holstein NI is indebted to Kilco, represented by Hugh McCluggage, for its generous sponsorship of the February show and sale.
