September 2011: Champion leads Moira Holstein sale at 3,100gns

Holstein NI’s first show and sale of the autumn and winter schedule got off to a buoyant start as quality heifers met a strong demand at the Pedigree Sales Arena, Moira.

Prices reached a ceiling of 3,100gns and 26 heifers came under the gavel of auctioneer Michael Taaffe to level at 1,839gns per head.

Top price went to Stephen Haffey and sons, Timothy, David and Aaron, from Lurgan, who brought out the day’s supreme champion, Kilvergan Jackson Ricki 2 – a potential 11th generation VG/EX. Born in April 2009 she is by Weeton Jackson, and out of a home-bred VG88 Ricecrest Emerson daughter which is now in her seventh lactation and has already produced over 70 tonnes of milk.

Calved almost three weeks and giving 30 kilos daily she attracted strong attention in the salering. The successful bidder was pedigree breeder, Ivor Broomfield, who runs the Moneyquin herd based at Armagh.

Judge, Simon Haffey from the Portadown-based Glasson herd described the champion as a clear and outright winner. “This heifer stood out. She is well balanced and will make a great cow. I found it hard to fault her.” The championship ribbons were presented by sponsor, Ian Cummins of Irwins Feeds.

William and James Crawford from Brookeborough met a ready market for heifers from their noted Ardmore herd. The Ardmore entry topped at 2,620gns and 2,550gns, with six heifers selling to average 2,051gns per head.

Selling for the second highest price of the day 2,620gns, was the third prize winning Ardmore General Jill. Sired by the Comestar Lheros son, Ardmore General, she is bred from Ardmore Talent Cousteau Jill (EX92). This heifer is a potential sixth generation EX and caught the eye of Isaac Hawthorne from Armagh.  Calved five weeks she is giving 38 litres per day.

Next best at 2,550gns was Ardmore General Jill 2, a potential seventh generation VG/EX. Born in June 2009 she is also by Ardmore General, bred this time from the VG89 Ardmore Sam Jill which gave almost 11,000 kilos at 4.17% butterfat and 3.45% protein in her third 305 day lactation. Calved four weeks and giving 38 litres daily, she sold to a County Tyrone milk producer.

The same buyer paid out 2,320gns to secure Newry Goldrun Breeze, an April 2009 born heifer brought out by Jim Stevenson, Kilkeel. Sired by the Braedale Goldwyn son, Newry Goldrun, she is out of a home-bred EX-2E Comestar Stormatic daughter. This one calved three weeks ago and is yielding 40 litres daily.

Following close behind at 2,300gns was Newry Baxter LT Barbie, a potential seventh generation VG/EX. Sired by Emerald Acr Sa T Baxter, this one is bred from Newry L Talent Barbie ET VG87, which gave over 10,000 kilos at 4.22% butterfat and 3.34% protein in herd third 305 day lactation. Calved three weeks and giving 35 litres per day, she was snapped up by Edwin Glasgow from Armagh.

Also selling at 2,300gns was the fourth prize winning Hilltara Duplexx Cherry 2, a March 2009 born Hilltara Duplexx daughter consigned by Sam McCormick from Bangor.

Sam McCormick also realised 2,200gns for the January 2009 born HIlltara Duplexx Cherry. This one was bred from Hilltara Champion Cherry 2 GP83.

Cows reached a ceiling of 1,980gns, paid to Jim Stevenson, Kilkeel, for his reserve overall champion, Newry Drake M Barbie. This four-year-old Far-o-la-Debbie Jo Drake ET daughter was bred from Newry Freeman M Barbie ET. She is three weeks calved and doing 40 litres per day.

“The reserve champion is a good cow, well balanced, and has a super udder,” concluded judge, Simon Haffey.

William and James Crawford won the honourable mention award with the May 2009 born Ardmore General Fiona. She is also by the home-bred Ardmore General, and out of Ardmore Dom D Fiona. This one changed hands at 2,080gns, selling to John O’Brien from Poyntzpass.

Holstein NI is indebted to Irwin Feeds for its generous sponsorship of the September show and sale.

Results from the judging ring include:
