There was a strong demand for bulls with good conformation and high components at Holstein NI’s 24th annual autumn show and sale, held at the Pedigree Sales Arena, Moira.

Prices peaked at 5,400gns, and following a 93% clearance Taaffe Auctions confirmed that 28 lots changed hands to average £2,948 per head. Read more >>>

August 2011: Open invitation to Holstein NI meeting on September 8

Parry 1Holstein NI has extended a warm invitation to all dairy enthusiasts to attend an open meeting at Gilgood Lodge, Moira on Thursday, September 8, commencing at 8pm.

Guest speaker for the evening is Chris Parry from Albert in Canada, who will give an ‘Insight into Commercial and Pedigree Farming in Canada’.

Mr Parry manages the genetics side of the business at Morsan Farms. He moved to Morsan six years ago, having previously managed a dairy unit in the UK, and worked for Semex UK for 16 years in the Midlands area.

Morsan Farms is home to 1,650 milking cows in a commercial dairy unit which is managed alongside its pedigree business. The herd is on three-times-a-day milking, and its current 305 day herd average is 12,226 kilos at 3.8% butterfat and 3.2% protein.

Although Morsan Farms is a large business, it is still very much a family-run operation.

Morsan Farms is involved with over 200 cow families, representing one of the largest genetic pools anywhere in the world.

Over the past five years Morsan Farms has had numerous show successes across north America. Its most recent achievement was grand champion red and white and reserve supreme champion at Madison in 2010. Blondin Redman Seisme was also grand champion red and white and supreme champion at the Royal Winter Fair in 2010.

Holstein NI secretary, John Martin said:”We look forward to welcoming Mr Parry to Northern Ireland. This promises to be an interesting and informative evening. Everyone is welcome.”

The Final of the McLarnon Feeds / NISA Dairy Cow Championship 2011 held at Antrim Show proved to be a spectacular event as the sun shone on the largest turnout of cows seen in the 10 years of this Championship.  Fifteen cows in total were presented on the day representing some of the best dairy stock in the Province from Northern Irelands top breeders battling itt out for the “Dairy Cow of the Year 2011” title. The Northern Ireland Holstein Young Breeders’ Club certainly made its mark at the National HYB Weekend Rally, held in Dumfries.

Accompanied by co-ordinator, Mrs Hilary Wilson, the Northern Ireland HYB teams dominated the hotly contested Field to Foto competition; and also claimed top place in the stockjudging competition with 3775 points – well ahead of the Western Club who scored 3743 points and Scotland South on 3722 points.

There was a buoyant trade for quality heifers at this week’s Holstein NI show and sale, hosted by Taaffe Auctions at the Pedigree Sales Arena, Moira Prices reached a ceiling of 2,500gns and 2,480gns, and following the day’s trading the auctioneers reported an 82 per cent clearance with 42 heifers selling to level at 1,666gns per head. July 2010 - Charity raises over £85,000 to help raise awareness of Motor Neurone Disease

PALS Ireland (People with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) was a charity founded by the late Ian Montgomery, Newtownards, after being diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (PALS).

Ian was well-known in farming circles. He was a prominent Holstein breeder, and his Smiddiehill prefix is recognised throughout the UK and further afield.
